he Davenport Hotel is located in the center of downtown arts, business, and shopping districts of Spokane. This hotel's historic, magnificent, comfortable and elegant. We love this hotel (I proposed to my wife there), even when we simply visit the lobby to enjoy the gorgeous decor.
From its inception in September of 1914, the Hotel has truly given its guests a treat for its luxurious lobby, marvelous suites, and impeccable service.
The Davenport Hotel has offered many interesting amenities that continue to pave the way for revolution in the hotel industry. First hotel with air conditioning, first with a central vacuum system, first with housekeeping carts - all these were industry's first.
But this revolution would have not been possible if not for the man who created the vision of building the hotel - Louis Davenport. And the man who helped make that vision turn into reality - architect Kirtland Cutter.
As exciting as it seemed, there was a time starting in 1987 when the hotel gradually experienced a hiatus, thereby, its operation was halted for 15 years.
This hibernation was cut short in March of 2000 when "Hope for the Davenport" existed to give birth to a new start.
At last, it was on the fateful day of September 2002 when the Hotel was open again. This time, entrepreneurs Walt & Karen Worthy made sure to completely renovate and modernize the place while maintaining to keep its rich history untainted and intact.
Today, the Davenport Hotel is considered as one of West Coast's crown jewels. As a testament, it was honored by Conde Nast Traveler (a renowned travel magazine) as a Gold List of the best places to stay in 2007 and Most Excellent Hotels in 2008.
True enough, the hotel has 283 guestrooms including 24 suites to date. Each suite has exquisitely hand-carved mahogany furniture for a bed plus the mattress is covered by Irish linens and with comfy pillows. Flat-screen televisions, free local phone calls and internet connection (wired or wireless) are available inside the rooms.
For the bathrooms, there's a huge walk-in marble shower and a separate deep European-style soaking tub. There is also a fitness center with complimentary towels. Together with a pool and spa tub, the facility is open 24/7.
In terms of dining, great food and delicious meals are served in an art-inspired and stylish setting.
The Palm Court grill serves seafood and steak while The Peacock Room and Espresso Bar serve fine wines and coffee drinks respectively. Apart from these, over-all hotel service is outstanding. The staff is very friendly and welcoming.
Much has been buzzed about its grandeur but an apt quote from Davenport and Worthy is worth remembering, "In all things, the hotel sincerely tries to so well please its guests that they will be glad they came, sorry to leave and eager to return."
As long as the fireplace burns in the hotel's lobby, there is no doubt that visitors will come and go. Famous ones included two presidents, Theodore Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy.
